Background of the Study

Ethno-religious conflicts in Nigeria have significantly influenced governance structures, particularly at the local government level, where tensions between different ethnic and religious groups are often more pronounced. Kafanchan, located in the southern part of Kaduna State, has experienced severe ethno-religious conflicts, which have hindered effective governance and socioeconomic development (Mohammed & Yusuf, 2023). These conflicts, often fueled by historical grievances, political manipulation, and competition for resources, have not only resulted in loss of lives and property but also undermined the ability of local government authorities to deliver basic services and promote social cohesion.

This study examines how ethno-religious conflicts have affected local governance in Kafanchan LGA, focusing on the challenges faced by local political leaders in managing diverse communities. By analyzing the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to these conflicts, the research aims to provide insights into how local governance can be improved in areas plagued by such divisions (Aliyu & Abdullahi, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Ethno-religious conflicts pose a significant barrier to effective governance and sustainable development in Kafanchan LGA. Despite the efforts of local and state governments to foster unity, the persistent conflicts between ethnic and religious groups continue to disrupt political processes and erode public trust in government institutions. This study seeks to assess the extent to which these conflicts have compromised the functioning of local governance and hindered development in Kafanchan LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the causes and dynamics of ethno-religious conflicts in Kafanchan LGA.

  2. To evaluate the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on local governance and service delivery in Kafanchan LGA.

  3. To propose strategies for managing ethno-religious conflicts and enhancing governance in Kafanchan LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the primary causes of ethno-religious conflicts in Kafanchan LGA?

  2. How do ethno-religious conflicts affect local governance and development in Kafanchan LGA?

  3. What strategies can be adopted to manage ethno-religious conflicts and promote effective governance in Kafanchan LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Ethno-religious conflicts significantly hinder effective governance in Kafanchan LGA.

  2. Ethno-religious conflicts contribute to poor service delivery and social instability in Kafanchan LGA.

  3. There are feasible strategies to manage ethno-religious conflicts and improve governance in Kafanchan LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will contribute to understanding the role of ethno-religious conflicts in shaping local governance and development, offering a context-specific analysis that can inform policymaking and conflict resolution strategies. By identifying the underlying causes of conflicts in Kafanchan, the research will provide recommendations for mitigating ethnic and religious tensions and promoting peace and development (Sule & Sambo, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of ethno-religious conflicts on local governance in Kafanchan LGA, particularly during the 2023 elections and recent periods of conflict. Limitations include difficulties in accessing sensitive information from local leaders and the reluctance of communities to openly discuss conflict-related issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Ethno-religious Conflicts: Disputes and violence arising from the tensions between different ethnic and religious groups.

  • Local Governance: The system of managing local government affairs, including the implementation of policies, provision of services, and political representation.
